Towards the ever-spring

I remember myself being a child with my umbrella glued permanently to my head. I remember the rain and the long winters. How incredibly things have changed! What a new paradise we live in!

Although things maybe shouldn’t be this way, Asturias has benefited from the global worming allowing us to enjoy our natural beaches for almost 6 months a year, our mountains almost all around the year and our gastronomy, Way of St James and Human Heritage (Unesco) 12 months a year.

If these reasons were not enough to consider Asturias the best place in Spain to spend my holidays, I could add another one: we have converted our two-hundred year old country houses in warm self catering holiday cottages, respecting its natural materials (wood and stone) but introducing the modern facilities.

I wouldn’t give a second thought. Asturias is my place!

The old shop of Lamuño

This is maybe not on the touristic brochures but it is, definitely, one of the main attractions of Lamuño, Cudillero (Asturias). The old shop of Celsita is right in the centre of the village and, at one moment or another, everybody drops by.

You may need a can of fish or a kilo of potatoes or you may just want to have a glass of wine at the “corner-bar”.

Need to give a present to your boyfriend or girlfriend? Celsita’s shop is also your place! Trendy earrings, bags, books and thousand and one other funny things.

And what is most special, Celsita will become your new friend in the village.

Urban knitting in Cudillero

Lots of colourful fishes flooded the fishing village of Cudillero, Asturias, this October.

Thirty knitting worshippers coming from around Spain gathered at the premises of La Casa del Campo in Cudillero, Asturias. While knitting, we heard about staining, qualities of wool and knitting design.

Lunches and dinners were very special moments, where we could taste the traditional Asturian cuisine. Stew of white beans with bacon, red sausage and black pudding called “fabada” by the locals, altogether with rice pudding as dessert, were two of the most successful. Also impossible not to mention the fantastic asturian caw and pork meat prepared in many different ways. So, please, wait for your holidays in Asturias to begin your diet!

The next day we went on a guided visit to Cudillero with Hugo, the local guide, who made us enjoy the real life of a unique fishermen village full o traditions, culture, old architecture and lovely people trying to make you feel at home.

The festivity finished with a manifestation of “urban knitting” consisting on decorating urban furniture of the harbour with colourful wool knitted fishes. It will stay there as long as weather and seagulls will allow.

Visiting Asturias, Vidio cape

What to do during our holidays at our self-catering holiday cottage in Spain (Asturias). Well, why not visiting Vidío Cape? This is one of the most impressive spots in Cudillero (5 minutes drive from the cottage) where you can contemplate the rough cost line, the wild life around, the steep cliffs and one of the youngest lighthouses in Spain.

There must be a reason why National Geographic chose this place for shots in storm.

After a good night rest at our self-catering holiday cottage in Spain (Asturias), a good idea could be spending a wonderful time visiting the pre-romanesque monuments in Oviedo, the capital of the old kingdom (contact your guide). The pre-romanesque style is the Asturian monarchy’s artistic expression as a singular feature in all Spain (VIII & IX century). While combining elements from other styles (Visigothic, Mozarabic, local traditions…) created and developed its own personality and characteristics. All in all, something “unique” you can only find in Asturias.

Visiting Cudillero

After a good night rest at our self-catering holiday cottage in Spain (Asturias), first thing in the morning must be visiting Cudillero, one of the oldest fishermen villages in Spain.

Celtic origins and strong characters make of this village a stunning place. Don’t miss the port, the old fish market (nowadays a sea museum), the Humilladero medieval chapel or the gothic church of St Peter. And, of course, enjoy the pleasure of seating in a restaurant by the marina and taste the Cantabric sea food.
